Using Viewpoint at an Event to communicate with younger children at a consultation event

A Children Fund arranged an event at young person’s learning centre at a premiership football club to consult them on health, diet and physical activities. Some of the 100 + young people who attended were as young as four years old. They had limited use of computers, tended to be shy and cautious especially compared to the many older, more assertive young people attending the event. Their literacy skills were less developed than the older young people. An adult facilitator describes one little girl, four years old, who he sat down next to at the Viewpoint PC at her request.

“She asked me in a quiet voice to help her, then allowed me to click on all the questions and responses that came up – she listened to them being spoken by the cartoon characters on the screen, then pointed to the answer she wanted. As the session progressed, she became more confident and took over herself…..engrossed in the interactive programme and ignoring me. The most important thing is she was able to contribute as much as any other of the 100 young people who used Viewpoint that day. We would not have been able to collect the views of 99% of the young people attending an event like this using any other method.”
