Computer Assisted
Self Interviewing
The Viewpoint Organisation
Examples of CASI in practice
For example, in the USA, to improve data collection,
The National Household Survey on Drug Abuse was
converted in 1999 to a computer-assisted interview
(CAI) format that incorporates extensive audio-computer
assisted self interviewing (ACASI). The University of North
Carolina has also used CASI successfully surveying diets
in populations where literacy is low and in multi ethnic
groups.
CASI applications have been used in the USA as part of a
large multi-site national study to prevent substance misuse
to improve access for children aged 9 to 11.
In Europe CASI is used by the Probation Inspectorate in
England and Wales to collect feedback from young people
using Youth Justice Services to inform the inspection of
services, and by the Social Services Inspectorate in
England to evaluate the services provided to young people
leaving care following the introduction of new legislation.
In Denmark CASI has been used by the National Institute
for Public Health for collecting youth data in an
anonymous survey of young people's sexual experiences
with adults before the age of 15.
Elsewhere CASI has been used in New Zealand for a
national adolescent health survey.
CASI technology was also used to obtain information
about sensitive issues including sexual behaviours and
drug and alcohol abuse with 6000 adolescents in rural
Kenya.
The use of computers in survey research in Europe and
the United States is increasingly viewed as an efficient
alternative to traditional interviewing techniques.
The Viewpoint Organisation is an independent
organisation. It has a reputation for conducting high
quality research on social issues in a wide range of
social policy areas, including health, crime, education,
careers, employment, and social attitudes and families.
It specialises in issues involving young people.
The Viewpoint Organisation methodology involves the
use of computer assisted self-interviewing methods of
data collection and recording. This computer-based
approach was first introduced in 1994 using software
specially developed by the Viewpoint Organisation.
Since this time Viewpoint CASI tools have been
extensively developed, including introducing tools to
increase accessibility for people with disabilities.
The Viewpoint Organisation has its own team of
specialist software developers and designers, a
research department and field staff providing local
support.
The Viewpoint Organisation works with organisations
to plan, and carry through to completion, surveys on a
local or national scale.
The Viewpoint Organisation will:
· Develop sampling and access plans
· Design and test the survey instrument
· Agree the sampling framework
· Plan and support data collection
· Analyse and report on results
